Thyroid Oral Capsules (T3/T4 Combination): Patient Information & Safety Notes

    Also known as NDT

    Other names: natural-desiccated-thyroid, ndt, compounded-thyroid-t3-t4

Compounded T3/T4 combination thyroid capsules provide both the active thyroid hormone T3 (liothyronine) and the prohormone T4 (levothyroxine) in a single preparation. Natural desiccated thyroid (NDT) products like NP Thyroid and Armour Thyroid are FDA-approved; custom-ratio compounded preparations are not standardized or FDA-approved.

FDA-approved desiccated thyroid products (NP Thyroid, Armour Thyroid) contain standardized T3/T4 ratios. Custom-ratio compounded T3/T4 capsules are available through 503A pharmacies but are not FDA-approved as standardized products.

    Common questions

    Patient questions

Is compounded T3/T4 better than levothyroxine alone?

Some patients report improved symptoms on combination T3/T4 therapy. However, large clinical trials have not consistently shown superiority over levothyroxine monotherapy. Compounded custom ratios lack FDA approval and standardization. A licensed provider and endocrinologist can assess whether this is appropriate for you.
